Beauty Buzz: Summer Essentials

As I make my way into the weekend for some much needed sun, fun, shopping, and relaxation-I can’t help but pass on what I think are summer essentials. In Monique language, that means beauty products your face, skin, nails, and hair will need to survive the harsh sun…and a few extras…of course. Besides, the sun also causes wrinkles!! That’s enough to convince me!

  1. Sunscreen: I can not stress how important it is to wear sunscreen. Come on! It’s your skin we’re talking about. The higher the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) the better. SPF is defined as a number assigned to a sunscreen that is the factor by which the time required for unprotected skin to become sunburned is increased when the sunscreen is used (Dictionary.com). There is even nail polish and daily skin moisturizers with UV (Ultraviolet Light) protection. Skin cancer will not make you curvaliscious by any means!
  2. Sunglasses: Please don’t forget about your lovely eyes! They need sun protection too! If you can, try buying sunglasses of higher quality. Sometimes, the less expansive brands do not carry any UV protection. I know this because, I used to work in the industry. If you take care of the sunglasses, it’s definitely a great investment.
  3. Lip Balm w/SPF: Here’s another product you might not think about, but those lips need all the protection they can get. Keep your lips sun-free and luscious at the same time!
  4. After-Sun Products: There are after-sun lotions, shampoos, and conditioners that will help replenish moisture to your skin and repair any damage done to your hair by environmental factors.
  5. Extras: Using any products (body scrub) to help prep your skin before you bare it, will definitely give you that summer glow. Even without going out into the sun, there are sunless lotions and bronzers to help.

Who is your favorite fashion designer and why?

I am a big fan of Jean Charles de Castelbajac. I love color, eccentric and unique things, I might even add bizarre things lol. My dream is to, one day, fit into on of his creations, definitely customized into my size !!

What is the one fashion accessory/item you can’t live without?

I really love hair accessories like a headbands, a cute little hair clips or a little bow tie. I do wear them often; it is a simple gesture, but it does add up a little extra something to the whole outfit.

If you were allowed to create a beauty product, what would it be and what would you name it?

Without any doubt, it would be a lipstick!! I love wearing lipstick that have a beautiful red or pink vividness. Therefore, I would create a color close to this two tones. I would manufacture a collection of classic lipsticks, but also another collection with more unique tones, without leaping into the ridiculous, of course !! As for a name, honestly I can’t really say.

If you only had 10 minutes to pack for a fashion extravaganza in your favorite city, what would you bring and where would it be?

If I had so little time, I would take my lovely black jacket, a pair of high heels, my pixel dress, my flounce dress and my inevitable little black dress. I’ll decide what to wear on the spot and in any case I think I’ll buy a lot of things once I get there !! Same for the accessories and the makeup, I would pick those of best value and use, and I’ll get the rest from there. As for the city, I would choose LONDON, because I have never been there and I’d do lots of shopping!!

Do you live by a fashion philosophy or quote? What is it?

My philosphy is to wear what we love, to find ourselves in a style that makes us happy and not to refrain ourselves from unique things, not necessarily in fashion. The most important thing is to feel great and hapyp in whatever we decide to wear!

Huh? What?

Today’s topic is “What?” Yes, the entire phrase “What?” is on the table today.

I have heard many things in my day. Good things, bad things, and questionable things. But have you ever overheard someone say something about you and you just can’t help but say “What?”

I had that moment and I can’t believe I almost forgot to tell you about it!

So, there I was walking out of the medical center into the parking lot. There were two older men walking about 20 feet behind me. I know they were older because they probably couldn’t hear very well, hence their loud

“quiet” voice.

Older dude #1: “You see that girl right there?”
Older dude #2: “Yeah?”
Older dude #1: “She got a cute face, but she’s kinda chubby.”

WHAT? Did I just hear them say that about me? I hope that wasn’t about me…was my first thought. But, I looked around and there weren’t any other women around. So, I assume they were referring to me.

That comment left me in kind of a weird place. I don’t mind the chubby part, because I am. But, do I feel good about being cute or do I feel confused because they only think my face is cute? Besides, I don’t do very well with compliments. I guess they do boost the good ol’ self esteem sometimes, but I don’t know how to take this one. The dudes were kinda creepy too.

Moral of the story…keep your “What?” comments to yourself or at least wait until you’re in the car to say them out loud. You’ll just leave me confused.

What’s your favorite or worst “What?” comment you’ve ever heard?

Birds and Paradise

Summer has just crept upon us! I know huh? Well, you know what that means…right? Luaus!! Pull out your tropical bird and floral prints. Don’t have any? No worries, I found a few for you. You’re going to be sitting there looking all cute, drinking out of a coconut, and eating BBQ. I love summer!

Topshop “Hangs” Out

Tassels, fringe, or strands? What would you call this jewelry trend? I tend to lean toward fringe. That’s the first word that comes to mind. Wait, does it really matter? Not really. What I do know is that Topshop is all over it! Are they ever going to open a store in Los Angeles? Hurry up already!!

Alisi Swimwear=Love

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I never thought it would be possible for me to fall in love with swimwear. I mean, I’ve always HATED my body in a bathing suit. Well, I guess Alisi Swimwear has given me a reason to LOVE again. I’m head-over-heels for these swimsuits! Gorgeous! They come in Australian sizes 12-24. That averages to US sizes of 10-22 (make sure you check out the size chart).

I would wear any one of them proudly in all of my curvy glory! Alisi is an Australian company, but they do ship internationally. You can even find them on these US and UK web sites, but it looks like sizes go pretty quickly. So get on it!

Let’s make a day at the beach or just lounging by the pool fashionably classic.

Beauty Buzz: Benefit Lip Gloss

It is officially summer! Are your lips ready? Yeah, I said lips. You know you need to keep them hydrated. Why not add a colorful Benefit lip gloss to your makeup bag while you’re at it. I love these shimmery colors for summer. I can’t choose just one!

Ouch! Bridesmaid Shoes Suck!

Guess what? I love weddings! Sad thing is, I haven’t been to one since mine…3 years ago! I was so honored to be a bridesmaid at my cousin’s garden wedding this past Saturday. It was a beautiful L.A. day and the bride was gorgeous! Love was beaming from their faces!! Oh, and for those who voiced their opinion on my hairstyle, I chose #6! There was only one thing that sucked? Our shoes! They are by Chinese Laundry and were made in satin. But, the style below is very similar.

I thought they were so cute too! But as I put them on, I wondered if the tiny (almost) 4-inch heels would hold this curvy chick up. They did, but not even 30 minutes after wearing them my feet started to hurt. Even during the ceremony I was having issues. My feet were slipping out of them. And for the past two days my calf muscles have been sore! I guess I’m not trained to wear (almost) 4-inch heels. That’s OK. But, if I had a choice, I would have chosen any of the ones below. I think these would make AMAZING bridesmaid shoes!!

Lingerie.com Review

When do you feel your sexiest? Is it when your lying around in a sexy piece of lingerie? It is isn’t it?

I am going to be completely honest…I used to be a t-shirt and sweats kind of girl. Now, I’m venturing into the world of sexy sexy. You know that place where anything lace, slinky, or frilly works?

You can only imagine how happy I was when Lingerie.com asked me to review something from their line of plus-size lingerie. Now, let me tell you this is one sexy web site…I hope you’re ready.

I honestly couldn’t decide what to pick, then I laid my eyes on the Flyaway Babydoll by Escante. It’s in this great bubblegum pink color, it just looked so fun!!

The first thing I was amazed by, is the fact that it fits in the breast area. I have a large chest and I am always spilling out of any store bought lingerie. I wear a US 16/18 and the 1X fits perfectly. The material is stretchy and soft, thus making it comfy. Their sizing chart is on point too! There is no underwire in the bra area, so you have to be prepared for that.

This is definitely an item that you’d want to hand wash, it’s a tad delicate. It’s made pretty well, but the edges look like they might unravel soon. So, I just have to be really careful with it. But it’s not something I’m going to wear daily.

Visiting Lingerie.com is pretty easy too, I just wish they had more of a selection. They have quite a few things, but I’d like a little more range of items. I’m all for products that make me feel pretty, feminine, and sexy. The prices aren’t too bad either for this bargainista, I’m going to keep coming back to see what they carry next.

If you’re looking for lingerie to make you or that special someone happy, then I’d definitely make time for a sexy visit!

Lingerie.com is on Facebook and Twitter too!

Who is your favorite fashion designer and why?

I adored the late great Alexander McQueen as he was so inspiring and kept fashion fun and refreshing. I also have a few peices by Vivienne Westwood. I love Ana Sui’s quirky/punk look too. It’s also my dream to own a Chanel quilted handbag. But what I tend to wear is stuff from the UK High Street – cheap, chearful, fun and versatile.

What is the one fashion accessory/item you can’t live without?

Black eyeliner – It adds a quick dash of glamour to any look!

If you were allowed to create a beauty product, what would it be and what would you name it?

Ooh what a good question. It’d be ‘MessyCarla’s Volumizaganza’ and would be a hair product for big, massive hair. Sleek is chic, but for me – pump up the volume!

If you only had 10 minutes to pack for a fashion extravaganza in your favorite city, what would you bring and where would it be?

My favourite city in the world is my home city of Newcastle. It’d be a very chillaxing event on Newcastle’s Quayside and anybody could attend as I love it when fashion opens it’s arms to people who wouldn’t usually be interested. There’s be fashion shows by high street brands and couture designers. Everywhere there would be cupcakes, chocolate fountains and everything would be PINK!

Do you live by a fashion philosophy or quote? What is it?

“Sometimes the illusion of grandeur is more endearing than actual riches” – Paloma Faith.

Because I love you…
