Eating Vegan Breakfast Alternatives

Thinking about switching to a vegan diet? You’re not alone. I know a lot of people are curious, but are scared to make the dietary change. Believe me when I tell you that I know what that feels like. There could be a million reasons why you want to cut out animal products from your daily meals. Yes, it’s hard and can be difficult—but it’s definitely not impossible. That’s why I’m here to help you out and offer some tips from what I’ve learned along my nine month journey.

Just so you know, I’m a true believer in baby steps. And if you are too, then this post is for you. I think one of the easiest ways is to start by switching out a few things that you normally use on a daily basis. Let’s start with the most important meal of the day. Here are a few vegan breakfast alternatives that you can start using tomorrow…or as soon as your sweet little heart wants to.

Instead of milk creamer try…

…a dairy-free creamer. I know…I know. You don’t want to change your coffee. But, what if I told you I know a plant-milk creamer that is amazingly creamy and delicious? Califia Farms carries a line of sweetened (or not) almond milk creamers that have stolen my heart. Available at most grocery chains and Whole Foods. They’re soy-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, carrageenan-free, non-GMO, and kosher. If your a coffee-on-the-go person, you could ask for soy, almond, or coconut milk at any of your favorite coffee shops.

Instead of butter…

…a buttery spread or vegan butter. If you’re like me and love having toast and strawberry jam for breakfast then butter is a major component. It really is. I’ve found a butter alternative in Earth Balance buttery spreads. I’m a fan of the Organic Whipped and use it for all of my butter needs. I’ve also heard a lot of great things about Miyoko’s Creamery European Style Cultured VeganButter. But, I haven’t tried it out for myself yet. It is on my shopping list.

Instead of buttermilk pancake mix try…

…dairy-free pancake mix. Yes, that’s a thing and they are still delicious and fluffy. All things that pancakes should be. I was having a hard time finding a pre-made mix that could rival the best out there. Then one day, right there in the Whole Foods aisle, I came across Birch Benders Organic Pancake and Waffle Mix (Classic Recipe). All I had to do was add water and my life was complete. If you’d rather make your own from scratch, I found this vegan pancake recipe from The Buddhist Chef that looks simply yummy!

Instead of breakfast sausage links try…

…vegan breakfast sausage. OK…before you yell at me about switching out your beloved meat products, give me a sec. In my opinion, Field Roast Grain Meat Co. makes some of the best tasting vegan sausage out there. I compared their Apple Maple Breakfast Sausage to a leading sausage brand and Field Roast was way lower in fat and had more protein than the meat sausage. Just throwing that out there. If you want to try other brands, please read the ingredients carefully. Some veggie sausages contain egg or dairy products.
