It’s Time to #MakeItHappen

I love this photo that my friend Reah took of me on a rooftop in New York City. It definitely wasn’t a planned pose. I just remember thinking how cold it was, but also how happy I was to be in one of my favorite cities. I’ve realized I made that happen. I’m responsible for that moment. And ever since learning of this year’s theme of International Women’s Day, #MakeItHappen, I couldn’t help but reflect on this photo and the consequences that lead me here.

My entire life, I’ve lived by the phrase “Everything happens for a reason.” Simple and still very true. Now, I know that I am also responsible for making all of it happen. I may have been invited to NYC, but I believe that my hard work and perseverance that landed me there.

Last year, I wrote a post inspired by this day. I titled it “Be the Woman You Were Meant to Be.” In it I wrote a list of items I was going to work on to fulfill my destiny. I can honestly say, I’ve worked, prayed, and accomplished things I never thought would happen. But it did. That’s the best part. I also know, that things that didn’t materialize for me, were also my doing. I take responsibility for that.

Don’t get me wrong, I think I’m always a work in progress and sometimes I need a little help. Really, who doesn’t? I’m only human. But, as my life continues, if there is something I want, it’s up to me to #MakeItHappen. No more excuses ladies. I encourage you to do the same.

What do you want to happen in 2015 for you? This is more than resolutions or wishes, because I know you’re going to work hard and make your dreams and goals a reality. Oh, and kick ass while you’re doing it!

International Women’s Day is March 8, 2015. It represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality.
