This is a compensated campaign in collaboration with NEUTROGENA® and Latina Bloggers Connect.
Let me start by saying, I never thought I’d write a post giving you tips on how to take a selfie. Seriously, I didn’t. But, after some thought I realized I’ve been taking selfies since I can remember. Even before cell phones could take photos. Yes, that was a loooooong time ago. And if you ever left your camera laying around, odds are when you developed your pics, there would be a few of me taking silly selfies. Today, they are a part of our cell phone culture. And I want to share my five favorite tips on how to rock them!
But first, I want to make sure I have the healthiest skin possible when I’m putting myself on display. Neutrogena sent me a package of some of my favorites: Neutrogena® Oil-Free Cleansing Wipes Pink Grapefruit for Acne-Prone Skin, Neutrogena® Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Facial Cleanser, and Neutrogena® Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub.
They powerfully treat and help prevent breakouts and blackheads while delivering a refreshing blast of 100% naturally derived grapefruit extract and vitamin C. These products are a staple in our home, we love them. I make sure to include them in my skin washing routine, a few times a week. Anything more than that and my skin will feel a little too dry. So keep that in mind!
Before we move onto the selfie tips, I have to tell you about this AWESOME Neutrogena giveaway!

AND…make sure you’re following me on Instagram where I’ll be posting my own selfies this week using some of the tips I’ve listed below!
Natural Light is Your Friend
Whenever possible, take your selfie in natural light—preferably indoors next to a window or even outdoors. I know that’s not always possible, just know that some lighting can be harsher on your skin and not very kind. You want people to see the real you!
Think Outside of the Box
When we think of selfies, we just imagine taking a photo of our own faces. That’s awesome…but why not add people, props, pets, shoes, our jewelry, or accessories? Get creative with fun angles, poses, and even your background. My favorite selfie to date is the one with my cat (above). It was a very unexpected moment that I caught.
Act Like No One is Watching
Like I said earlier, taking selfies has become very common. So, don’t be shy about snapping a selfie in public. A great photo will always be the one where you’re comfortable, confident, and having fun.
Sometimes…late at night…when I’m in bed…I search the app store for new photo apps. I’m a little obsessed. I love playing around with filters too. This can come in handy when you take a selfie in bad lighting. I always have a resizing, reflection, and editing app on hand. I even found one that makes GIFS (animated images), it’s so fun! Check out these suggestions for editing apps here and here.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
When you’re snapping that selfie make sure to be aware of your surroundings—for a few reasons. The first one is to make sure you’re considerate of those around you. You don’t want to be rude and take one in the middle of church or an important meeting. Also, don’t do it while you’re driving, crossing the street, walking on a ledge…etc. There’s no need to hurt yourself for a selfie. And lastly, make sure you’re not taking a photo of someone without their permission or giving some stranger an opportunity to photobomb your pic (unless you’re into that sort of thing).
