Let’s be honest, when was the last time you thought about scalp care? I’ll admit I rarely give my own scalp any thought and how to properly take care of it. It’s not something that a lot of people talk about either and it’s really only a problem when you’re having issues. Well, we’re not going to remain clueless around here anymore. I reached out to Neutrogena® Dermatologist Dr. Leyda Bowes, for a few essential tips for a healthy scalp.
According to Dr. Bowes, “Failing to shampoo hair everyday creates a mass storage of pathogens—disease-causing bacteria.” OK, that does not sound good! She goes on to say, “the scalp attracts and retains more dirt than your skin does, which is a serious issue resulting in thinning and drying of hair. Not washing your hair frequently or at least twice a week, can lead to many scalp disorders.”
2. Shampooing Regularly is Vital
There seems to be a shampooing misconception out there. “Many people with dry or damaged hair feel that shampooing regularly will damage and tangle hair,” said Dr. Bowes. She recommends shampooing your hair several days a week. Or at least twice per week to maintain a healthy scalp—this is regardless of your hair type.
3. Scalp Care Starts on the Inside
Make sure you’re taking your vitamins! “Hair loss and premature graying are both associated with low levels of B vitamins. Biotin is known to aid in healthy hair growth. The antioxidant Vitamin E also increases scalp circulation,” said Dr. Bowes.
4. Normal Scalps Need Love Too
If you have a normal scalp, that doesn’t mean you should neglect it. Dr. Bowes recommends, you shampoo and condition your hair twice a week and use a light conditioner after, to avoid that dreaded frizz.
5. Oily Scalps Need Extra Attention
Dr. Bowes points out that an oily scalp is most prone to dandruff and flaking. It’s your sebaceous glands that are producing excess oil on your scalp around the roots—this clogs your pores. She recommends, “For an oily scalp, shampoo your hair every day. If you suffer from dandruff, find an anti-dandruff product. Oily scalps should only leave conditioner on for less than 60 seconds.”
6. Dry Scalps Require Less Shampooing
Did you know that a dry scalp is usually what leads to rough, dull, and frizz hair? “Shampoo only once a week with a product that contains natural oils for moisture. Use a cream-based conditioner and leave it on for approximately 10 minutes before rinsing off,” said Dr. Bowes.
7. Do Not Neglect Scalp Care During Summer Months
It turns out that your scalp and hair will require a little more TLC in the summer months. “The chlorine in pools, even if these are salt-water pools, as well as the intense sun and ultraviolet rays at the beach, can all affect the hair. These factors can lead to dry, frizzy hair and split ends,” said Dr. Bowes.
8. Pretreat Scalp & Hair Before Swimming
If you want to stop your hair from soaking up the chlorine in pools and protect it from the harmful UV rays, Dr. Bowes offers a helpful tip. “…go in the water with the hair already previously soaked up with regular tap water or with a leave-in conditioner such as the Neutrogena® Triple Repair Fortifying Leave-In Treatment. This will significantly reduce the absorption of chlorine and protect the hair from sun rays. Washing hair and conditioning after the beach or pool is equally as important,” said Dr. Bowes.
9. Wet Scalp No No’s
We don’t give much attention to our scalp after the washing, but there are a few things we should remember. First, Dr. Bowes recommends that you should avoid brushing your hair when the scalp is wet. And to “…not tie up wet hair as the moisture accumulates and clogs the pores, subjecting your scalp to bacterial and fungal infections,” she said.
