Curvy Girl Travels: A Packing Lesson Learned

There are just some travel boo boos we can’t anticipate. When I was at Target last week buying a bottle of Sally Hansen’s Quick Dry nail polish, little did I know it would inspire a Curvy Girl Travels post. I was so sick that week with sinus allergies that I didn’t have time to make sure my nails were all painted and ready to go for my blog conference. So, I packed a bottle of this polish that everyone brags about. I was dying to try it out.

I packed my toiletries in my favorite (clear) SOHO cosmetic case and went on my way. I flew Virgin American non-stop to Dallas. After a two-and-a-half hour flight I hopped into a taxi to my hotel. I get to my room and started to unpack. As I unzipped the suitcase I immediately smell nail polish and a million thoughts run through my head. I could just see it now, a suitcase filled with nail polish.

Instead I find this…

Curves-and-Chaos-Travel

After breathing a sigh of relief and thanking God nail polish wasn’t all over my clothes, I was kinda bummed about my new bottle of Sally Hansen and my cosmetic bag. On the bright side of things, the nail polish was already dry by the time I got to my room. Sooooo…it does work? After some thought, either the bottle exploded from the air pressure or it broke when they were presumably tossing around my suitcase.

Whatever happened, I now know to be more careful when packing my beauty products. I can’t believe I slipped! I have learned my lesson! I will double bag any liquids in plastic bags and make sure to pad any breakables. In fact, I found this great article on RealSimple.com on How to Pack Your Beauty Products. It offers great tips!

Have you ever had a travel mishap like this happen to you?

I always put some tape around the bottle cap and then put them on a resealable bag.

I’m glad your clothes arrived fine. :-) Whenever I travel, I always make sure to pack all liquids in a separate zippered plastic bags in case of any spills. The one mistake I made on my last trip is I left my luggage lock hanging on the zipper and the TSA personnel broke my suitcase zipper because they thought my luggage was locked.

I keep nail polish in my suitcase all the time and have never had a problem, but I did have a shampoo bottle explode once. It was in a bag, but it leaked out of the bag and onto a natural linen blazer. I figured – hey, it’s shampoo, it’ll be easy to clean. Sadly, that wasn’t the case. There must have been some dye in the shampoo and it left an ugly yellowish blotch on the blazer that I’ve never been able to get out. Alas.

@ThePirateBee:disqus Ohhhh no :( that sucks!

aye yi yi. that sucks. I go through so many zip lock bags because I fear this. I would cry if it got on my clothes.
