5 Questions: Reah Norman

I love doing this 5 Questions feature. It’s a way for me to introduce you to (awesome) people who I think you should get to know. Today, I want to introduce you to one of my very good and super supportive friends, Reah Norman. She’s a stylist and is one of the hardest working people in fashion. She’s a pro at what she does and I know you’ll love her as much as I do!

Style For Hire Stylist

What does being a stylist mean to you?

The best thing about my job is connecting with real women and helping them feel great about themselves by offering them a fresh perspective on fashion, educating and giving them tools to look their best, and helping them discover their personal style. I love representing the positive side of plus, and empowering women to look and feel great, no matter what their size.

Every single day I get to do something a little different, which always keeps it exciting- shopping for a photo shoot, wardrobe & closet consultation, blogging, coordinating a fashion show, researching styles and trends, personal shopping, consulting on plus designs & collections, and of course, styling on set. I am also the Executive Fashion Director for PLUS Model Magazine, so I wear several different hats!

What or whom inspires you the most?

I gain inspiration and build my aesthetic from everything around me- environment, art, interior design, and lifestyle. Also, I find that being part of the plus size fashion community inspires me daily. I love seeing beautiful photographs of plus size women expressing their personal style, whether they are bloggers, models, or just women embracing their size and “thinking outside the fashion box” as I always say!

Where are your favorite places to shop?

Anywhere and everywhere that they sell my size! I search high and low for pieces to add to my wardrobe that reflect my personal style and flatter my “more in the middle” shape. I spend a lot of time browsing through retail stores, shopping online, trying things on, and returning and exchanging to build my wardrobe. I love to pieces that are versatile and that I can mix & match, season after season. Shopping online is a great option for me to find a wide selection of sizes and styles from retailers all over the world that carry plus sizes. Building our wardrobes is a never-ending process!

What is your fashion “weakness?”

Scarves, handbags and cardigans. I am addicted!

What advice would you give to any new or aspiring stylist?

If you want to have a successful career as a stylist, you must take it very seriously and treat it like a business. You must be organized, have exceptional customer service and communication, be willing to grow and learn, and most importantly, put in the time as an assistant or intern. I highly recommend seeking out a stylist that you admire, and offer yourself as an intern or assistant to them. It is important to learn the “in’s and out’s” of the business from someone who is successful and has similar career aspirations. The biggest mistake that people make is calling themselves stylists when they actually have zero experience working as a stylist. Having a love for fashion or being a fashion writer/blogger does not make someone a stylist. There is a huge difference between writing about your love of fashion, and actually building a business as a stylist. Being a fashion stylist is not always as glamorous as it seems. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, however it is very rewarding. If being a photo stylist is your dream, then give it your all and go for it!
