Last week I wrote a post titled “I Think it’s Time for a Personal Beauty Intervention.” I wrote about the struggles we go through when it comes to personal beauty and how we’re always criticizing ourselves. I made a point to emphasize how our level of self-esteem is contagious. Sometimes we don’t realize how that affects others around us.
Having low self-esteem and a lack of confidence in ourselves is an epidemic. And not just among us either, but with the young girls in our lives. According to Dove Global Research, 72% of our girl’s (ages 10-17) feel tremendous pressure to be “beautiful.” Seriously, that should be the last of their worries!
Because of statistics like that, I’m very excited to share the theme of Dove’s third annual Self-Esteem Weekend-”Let’s Talk” (En Espanol: Vive Mejor’s Hablemos). It’s as simple as it sounds…take a moment to show the young women in your life that you care. Have an honest conversation with them about beauty. Come on…Dove Global Research also found that only 11% of girls (ages 10-17) are comfortable using the word beautiful to describe themselves. That’s a problem!
I spent my teen years thinking I was just a chubby girl with acne. I felt like no boy will ever like me. And I wanted nothing more than to be one of the “popular girls.” Yes, I played sports and was pretty involved in school activities, but I always had that feeling that I wasn’t beautiful enough. It sucks, because that was pretty much my world. I can’t even imagine how much my life would’ve changed if one of my peers sat me down and talked to me about real beauty…inside and out.
Here’s your chance to be that person. Dove is inviting women across the U.S. to participate in their Dove Self-Esteem Weekend, taking place October 5-7 nationwide. From a silent march in Times Square to Walmart stores having designated areas within the store where visitors can share a message of encouragement to girls, there are many ways to get involved.
Join in on a Facebook chat with program expert, People en Espanol columnist and parenting expert Jeannette Torres-Alvarez this Thursday, October 4th from 7 -8 pm EST on https://www.facebook.com/vivemejor
What words of advice would you give a young girl in your life?
